Message from the Chair

Since assuming the role of Chair in October, I have been involved in many discussions about the diverse needs of Victoria’s working harbour. Having reached the 5th anniversary of the incorporation of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority we have an excellent opportunity to reflect on what has been accomplished and to plan for the years ahead.

One of the major accomplishments of the past five years is the growth of the cruise industry at Ogden Point. The increase in ship calls has been an opportunity as well as a responsibility and work continues with the local community to minimize impacts while recognizing the economic value to the entire Capital Region that this segment of the tourism industry brings.

No achievements would be possible without the support and involvement of many committed individuals. The harbour community is blessed with much talent and enthusiasm and our celebration in February was an opportunity to recognize some of these great people through the publication of the history of the GVHA. We also made the announcement of three distinguished individuals who have been given the title of Honorary Life Member, those being Stewart Johnson, Peter Lloyd, and Paul Ridout. The Society is grateful for their tireless efforts and we look forward to their continued council and support.

Moving forward, we are very excited about the challenges and opportunities for Victoria Harbour. With work well underway to improve Fisherman’s Wharf and the Ship Point Docks, we continue to balance the needs and wants of many users to ensure the harbour remains a place where we can live, learn, work and play.

Thank you for your involvement in this great work.
